Atimatik
is not just another DJ, but rather a musician.
His music career started over a decade ago as
he learned to play the guitar and bass. Soon
later, he was touring as bassist with Bay Area
based punk band, Loose Bearing, playing with
many legendary punk acts. With some college
background, he always managed to get A's in
music instruction. During this time (mid 90's)
he experienced the SF rave scene and was blown
away by its carefree, exciting, and underground
(at the time) environment. Naturally drawn to
the music, he purchased his first Technics 1200mk2
turntable in early 1996, found an old Yamaha
belt drive turntable in his attic, and then
the rest was history!
He was 100% self taught, but picked up DJing
fast due to his general music and mechanical
understanding. To him, mixing two records is
not just aligning two beats, rather finding
tones and melodies that harmonize, while finding
tracks that create dynamics. Some of his influences
come from the frequent, old school DJ lineups
of the early DJ Dan, Barry Weaver, and Donald
Gluade sets. Atimatik's general knowledge of
instruments and different styles of music landed
him DJ work with Warner Brothers Records based
"Mephisto Odyssey". To say the least, Atimatik
is a little more than your average DJ.
Atimatik's sets usually have the 'throw your
hands in the air' hard, pumping beats he experienced
in those earlier party days, but with elements
that make his sound modern. His primarily styles
include dirty-electro house and new school breaks,
but can vary depending on particular gigs.
Some of the parties he's played at are Clockwerk
Event's Atlantis, Live 105/Rocktronica at the
Fillmore and the Great American Music Hall,
Burning Man at the Warner Brother's camp, Forum
Nightclub, Polo's Blue Cube, Glas Kat, 550 Barneville,
Love Parade SF '04, '05 & '06,Fahrenheit,
Avalon, Jelly's, 1015, and many more.
Recently in June of 2005, Atimatik became "Breakbeat
Champion" on
DJForums.com
by winning the final round of a series of mix
submissions that were put against other DJ's
within the breakbeat genre, including fellow
crew members
Emerge
and
Devious.
Although you can still find Atimatik playing
bass, his primary project remains spinning in
front of frantic crowds with his unique, floor
pumping style.
